Art collector, private art dealer, and Major League Baseball owner Jeffrey Loria built his legacy by bridging two worlds that demand both passion and precision in pursuit of excellence.
About
Jeffrey Loria is a private art dealer and collector who brought his collector eye and entrepreneurial spirit to professional sports ownership, culminating in his Major League Baseball Team, the Florida (now Miami) Marlins, winning the 2003 World Series.
Loria began his career in the art world, where he helped major collectors build their art holdings, including the collections that later became the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Norton Simon Museum, and the Chrysler Museum. As a private dealer and collector, he specialized in 19 th- and 20 th -century art and worked with many of the 20 th Century’s most recognized artists. His success in the art world allowed him to pursue his second passion, baseball, culminating in his ownership of the Marlins. Under his leadership, the underdog team won the 2003 World Series, defeating the New York Yankees in their home stadium in New York.
Loria’s approach has combined business acumen with a deep appreciation for both athletic and artistic excellence. He understands that success requires patience, strategic thinking, and the ability to recognize talent on canvas or on the diamond. He oversaw the building of a major new stadium in South Florida, which has become a leading venue for sports and other major events and has received wide praise for its architectural innovation, including from the New York Times. Loria also identified major baseball talent, including Giancarlo Stanton, Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera, and the late Jose Fernandez, and gave each their professional start with the Marlins.
After selling the Marlins, Loria returned his full-time professional focus to the art world. The author of four books, he has just completed his fifth work, a comprehensive history of Modern Art. His professional story reflects the intersection of culture, business, and sports in modern America.
